Who was Albert Bierstadt? Despite criticism in his later years for being extravagant and unpolished, Albert Bierstadt is largely regarded today as being one of Americas best landscape painters; a man whose works present a distinctive image of the natural history of America throughout the last half of the 19th century. He created epic landscape paintings of the wild American West using drawings and photographs, which were enormously popular with the American audience. Deana Lawson’s strikingly intimate photographs examine themes of family, cultural legacy, sexuality, spirituality and employ black aesthetics as the cornerstone of her distinctive oeuvre. Her works draw upon visual traditions such as formal portraiture, social documentary, and personal family albums, expertly recording social narratives of African American day-to-day life in contemporary America.
Lawson’s subjects are often strangers she meets in public spaces, yet she refers to them as “her family”. She arranges her models in domestic settings, paying particular attention to lighting and pose, which the artist utilizes to transform and intensify these intimate spaces. Marian Goodman Gallery is very pleased to announce a forthcoming exhibition of works by the acclaimed Ukrainian photographer Boris Mikhailov which will be on view from 10 January to 22 February Known for his groundbreaking photographic practice which combines his interest in cinema, documentary, performance, and writing, Mikhailov has been an inventive, tender but uncompromising witness to the changing fate of his native Ukraine and the consequent experiences of war and displacement. The exhibition explores his rethinking and reworking of the photographic image by including two video works – one from the late '60s-'70s, Yesterday’s Sandwich, and the most recent, Our Time is Our Burden, – as well as showcasing three iconic photographic series from the ‘80s and ‘90s.
