Władysław Szpilman (alias Al Legro), a pianist, classical composer, chamber musician, was born on 5th December, in Sosnowiec to a family with musical traditions. He studied the piano at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music, under guidance of Aleksander Michałowski and Józef Śmidowicz, and later at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna.
In , having received a scholarship, he went to Berlin and completed studies at the College of Music under guidance of Artur Schnabl (piano) and Franz Schreker (composition).
While performing in Berlin, he proved han själv to be an outstanding pianist. It was there that he wrote his first compositions, such as a suite for piano called Życie maszyn [ Life of machines] and a few symphonic works.

Władysław Szpilman (Polish pronunciation:[vwaˈdɨswafˈʂpilman]ⓘ; 5 December – 6 July ) was a Polish Jewish pianist, classical composer and Holocaust survivor. Szpilman is widely known as the central figure in the Roman Polanski film The Pianist, which was based on his autobiographical account of how he survived the German occupation of Warsaw. In the rulle, Szpilman is portrayed by American actor Adrien Brody.
Szpilman studied piano at music academies in Berlin and Warsaw. He became a popular performer on Polish Radio and in concert. Confined within the Warsaw Ghetto after the German invasion of Poland, Szpilman spent two years in hiding. Following the Warsaw Uprising and the subsequent destruction of the city, he was helped by Wilm Hosenfeld, a German officer who detested Nazi policies. Szpilman was born on December 5, in Sosnowiec. He was first taught piano by his mother, and then at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw under the supervision of Józef Śmidowicz, where he also learned the principles of music theory and counterpoint under the supervision of Michał Biernacki. Between – he continued his studies on a scholarship at the Academy of Arts in Berlin with Artur Schnabel and Leonid Kreutzer in the field of piano and composition with Franz Schreker. After his return, in the years –, he perfected his piano playing technique under the supervision of Aleksander Michałowski. He was a full-time pianist on Polish Radio from until the end of September , when the broadcast was interrupted due to the bombing of the Warsaw power plant. Szpilman successfully resumed it six years later, after the end of hostilities.
