  • The Singham of yesteryears has not only done the community proud with being a highly decorated model policeman but penned his autobiography that.
  • He was born in Goa and played all his cricket in Goa, which at the time was ruled by the Portuguese.

In politics, never write off anyone. A few months ago, I was invited by the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) leader, and politician of the moment, K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) to his residence for an Andhra (oops, Telangana!) lunch. Tied up with other work, I frankly did not make an effort to keep the date. The fact that KCR’s party just has two MPs, including KCR, may have influenced my decision. And just think about it, India had never before nor since, produced a Goa-born cricketer. To my mind, it exemplifies the kind of journey that my father had to make. He often used to tell me, “You have got it all. You have got the facilities. You have got the legacy. You have got the opportunity. But my friend, you don’t have the talent and you don’t have the fire in the belly.” And he was right. To man it to the top, you need a fire in the belly. In 1962, my father went to the West Indies as
