    Nitin Sawhney: Only human

    It's early August 2002 and on the other end of the line a barely audible voice croaks, "I'm not very well at all. My voice is going and my body has gone into spasms. I'm off to see the doctor in about five minutes." After months of battling personal demons and intricate melody phrases, Nitin Sawhney has at last finished his new album, Human. The doctor suggests that he has been overworking and needs a complete break for a couple of weeks. In the end, time restrictions mean that all he takes is a late booking to Portugal for a week before diving headlong into the waiting media frenzy.

    The beginning of June this year sees Sawhney in a much more relaxed and vibrant state of mind. We meet up at his small but elegantly minimalist pad in south London to discuss the new album and discover why this highly rated musician puts himself through the mill every time he digitises a note on to his computer.     Q. Are you looking forward to the July 14 release date for the album?
    A.     Yeah, I'm looking forward to it a lot, actually, it should be cool. Just seeing what people make of it. I mean, it's been good around Europe, where I've been doing loads of interviews and just chatting to people. But there is a nice vibe from the album; it's cool.

    Q. You describe it as your most personal work to date, does that also mean that, as a result, it's one of the albums you're most proud of?
    A.     I'm proud of all the albums I've made, because I feel like they're honest. It's what inom feel and what I think. So from that point of view I feel happy with them.
    This one's kind of an autobiographical album, so it's probably the most personal one, like you said.
    In that way, I kind of feel like I'm most exposed on it, but I also feel like I'm most connected to it.
    I also feel very happy with the collaborations, because also it's an album of songs.
