Celia Cruz, or her full name Úrsula Hilaria Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso was born October 21, 1925 in Havana, Cuba and died July 16, 2003 in Fort Lee, New Jersey, U.S. She was a Cuban American singer who reigned for decades as the “Queen of Salsa Music,” who won audiences over with her wide-ranging soulful voice and rhythmically compelling style.
Celia grew up in Santos Suárez, a district of Havana, in a family of 14. When she was in high school she wanted to become a literature teacher, but after winning a talent show, , in which she interpreted the tango piece “Nostalgia” in a bolero tempo, Celia pursued a singing career. Celia Caridad Cruz Alfonso[a] (21 October 1925 – 16 July 2003), known as Celia Cruz, was a Cuban singer and one of the most popular Latin artists of the 20th century. Cruz rose to fame in Cuba during the 1950s as a singer of guarachas, earning the nickname "La Guarachera de Cuba". In the following decades, she became known internationally as the "Queen of Salsa" due to her contributions to Latin music.[4][5][6] She had sold over 10 million records, making her one of the best-selling Latin music artists.[7]
The artist began her career in her home country Cuba, earning recognition as a vocalist of the popular musical group Sonora Matancera, a musical association that lasted 15 years (1950–1965). Cruz mastered a wide variety of Afro-Cuban music styles including
