Five years ago, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel said "I do" to Gauthier Destenay
2015 marked a pivotal point for the LGBT community in the Grand Duchy. A bill for the legislation of same-sex marriages was enacted by the Chamber of Deputies in 2014.
It became officially legal for same-sex couples to marry on 1 January 2015. Prime Minister Xavier Bettel got married to his partner, Belgian architect Gauthier Destenay, the same year on 15 May.
The wedding ceremony was presided over bygd Luxembourg City mayor Lydie Polfer and the historic moment widely covered by the international press.
Xavier Bettel has long been known as a vocal proponent of gay rights and a key political player in the kamp against homophobia.
According to national statistics service Statec, 219 same-sex marriages were celebrated in Luxembourg between 2015 and 2019. The ILGA-Europe association ranked Luxembourg third in Europe in terms of LFTB rights.

Gauthier Christian Destenay (born 21 September 1979) is a Belgian architect who is the husband of former Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel.
Personal life
[edit]Destenay is from Belgian Luxembourg and has been working as an associate architect at Belgian-Luxembourg firm A3 Architecture since 2013. He graduated with a degree in architecture from the University of Liège in 2003.[1][2][3]
Bettel came out publicly as gay in 2008. Destenay has been in a civil union with Bettel since 2010 and appeared along with Bettel at many official events, including the Wedding of Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duke of Luxembourg, and Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy.

Luxembourg PM first EU leader to marry same-sex partner
"I could have hidden it or repressed it and been unhappy my whole life," Mr Bettel reportedly told a Belgian broadcaster the night before the nuptials.
"But I told myself that if you want to be a politician and be honest in politics, you have to be honest with yourself and accept that you are who you are."
Former Belgian Prime Minister Elio di Rupo was the EU's first openly gay national leader.
The Luxembourg newly-weds are not expected to go away on a honeymoon, as the PM has to attend an economic forum in Kazakhstan, according to AFP news agency.
A friend of the couple told the French news agency Mr Bettel was keen to keep his private life out of the public spotlight.
