    The lynching of Michael Donald in Mobile, Alabama, on March 21, , was one of the last reported lynchings in the United States.[1][2] Several Ku Klux Klan (KKK) members beat and killed Michael Donald, a year-old African-American, and hung his body from a tree. One perpetrator, Henry Hays, was executed by electric chair in , while another, James Knowles, was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty and testifying against Hays. A third man was convicted as an accomplice and also sentenced to life in prison, and a fourth was indicted, but died before his trial could be completed.

    Hays's execution was the first in Alabama since for a white-on-black crime.     1 This is an appeal against conviction and sentence. Sze Pak Hei, Gabriel (the “Appellant”) had been convicted on eight counts of forgery under s  of the Penal Code (Cap , Rev Ed) (“PC”) after a lengthy trial that involved 21 witnesses and three ancillary hearings. The District Judge (the “DJ”) sentenced the Appellant to 14 months’ imprisonment.

    2 Having considered the submissions, evidence, and oral arguments bygd the parties, I dismiss the appeal and set out my reasons below.

    The headline above from the Singapore Straits Times newspaper web site  may seem  obscure to many regular readers of the HelpGov blog. But it’s about government in the widest sense and I feel quite strongly about it.

    I was alerted to it by comments on Facebook condemning both the alleged perpetrator and his victims in what was said to be a ‘sex-for-grades’ case.

    On the face of it, this is the story of a 41 year-old male lag professor who had sex with a 23 year-old female lärling, arguably a minor but salacious court case.

    My initial thought was to respond to Singaporeans who commented approvingly of a skyldig verdict along the lines of ‘What irks me is that the ladies always treated like they were guiltless’ and ‘Our chaps know the ladies are a contributing factor, no doubts about that.’ I was going to point out that perhaps there was an abuse here by someone who held disproportionate power over much younger students.
