Charles Frazier was born in Asheville. He currently lives part of the year within sight of the building in Biltmore by where he was born. Branches of his family settled in western North Carolina at least a couple of hundred years ago. He grew up in Andrews, NC, a town of about a thousand people more than two hours west of Asheville in the far, pointy tip of the state. A member of the state legislature once told Frazier, I didnt even know there was any North Carolina two hours west of Asheville.
Frazier first visited Chapel Hill at fourteen, and after walking around campus for an hour, he decided UNC was the only place he would consider going to college. He graduated in and later acquired graduate degrees from Appalachian State and the University of South Carolina, which residents of that state insist upon calling Carolina no matter how often theyre corrected.

Charles Frazier, award-winning author, was born in Asheville, North Carolina, in Frazier received his BA degree from the University of NC, Chapel Hill, in , and went on to study at Appalachian State University, where he met his future wife Katherine, whom he married in His first published book was a travel guide for the Sierra Club called Adventuring in the Andes, published in the year after his daughter Annie was born (). The following year he completed his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina, in American literature. After a teaching stint at the University of Colorado, Boulder, he returned to North Carolina, where both he and Katherine taught at North Carolina State University. It was Katherine who convinced Frazier to devote all his time to writing, and the tale he wanted to write was based on the family story of his great-great uncle William P.
