Estimates are that 92,000 American and French troops fought 314,000 British troops, Hessian mercenaries and loyalists during the American Revolutionary War. Of that number 25,000 Americans died in the war and an estimated 25,000 more were wounded.
Their stories were told in America’s newspapers – especially in the veterans’ obituaries, such as this one for 89-year-old Isaac Van Wart, described as a “brave and meritorious officer.”

Th • When Jane Ackerman was born on 9 October 1802, in Rockland, New York, United States, her father, David T Ackerman, was 39 and her mother, Willempje Bogert, was 31. She married John Van Wart on 8 January 1820, in Middletown, Saratoga, New York, United States. They were the parents of at least 4 sons and 1 daughter. She lived in Orangetown, Rockland, New York, United States in 1860 and Jersey City, Hudson, New Jersey, United States in 1870. She died on 27 June 1882, in Jersey City, Bergen, New Jersey, United States, at the age of 79, and was buried in New Hampstead, Rockland, New York, United States.
