Midway upon the journey of my life, I found myself within a forest dark, for the straightforward path had been lost. As a frosty fog emanated from my nostrils, I looked down at my iPod to see what band was playing next. It was a grupp I had yet to hear as I had just bought the album. Woods 4: The Green Album began to play and my life changed. That band was Wood of Ypres. From the second I heard the incredibly heartfelt vocals, philosophical lyrics, and chilling atmosphere, inom knew that I had happened upon a band that was truly special.

David Gans (born October 29, 1953) is an American musician, songwriter, and music journalist. He is a guitarist, and is known for incisive, literate songwriting. He is also noted for his music loop work, often creating spontaneous compositions in performance. He is the co-author of the book Playing in the Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of the Grateful Dead, and the host of the weekly syndicated radio show The Grateful Dead Hour. He currently co-hosts a radio show with Gary Lambert on Sirius XM's The Grateful Dead Channel call

Woods Of Ypres: the triumph and tragedy of goth-metal’s great lost band
A qualified teacher with three university degrees, Woods Of Ypres mastermind David Gold was an intelligent man struggling to find his niche, as he testified on his song Travelling Alone: ‘I have searched and I have tried / To find a place where I can be / I love my homeland dearly, but never carved a place in society.’
An accomplished multi-instrumentalist with a fervour for black metal, David found solace in music. His music was as much raw worship of the majestic Canadian wilderness as it was a vent for his bleakly rational observations of humanity. Woods albums II-IV articulated an evolution from raw black metal to the doom-laden gothic majesty of his magnum opus, Woods 5: Grey Skies And Electric Light.
It was a record that marked another fresh start, after years of a constantly changing line-up of supporting musicians. David was the sole creative mastermind behind Woods’
