    Matthew Walker III was a Renaissance man—a renowned biomedical researcher who developed drugs to treat cardiovascular diabetes, cancer, and obesity; a music lover who served on the board of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; a man of faith who was proud of his family’s legacy; and a lifelong learner hailed as a superb mentor and teacher.

    “He had such a penchant for the creative as well as academia,” said his widow, Anna. “He was a person of extreme diligence and excellence and had an uncanny sense of recall. Yet he was a person who loved connecting with people, mentoring, and giving back. He loved his son and his family beyond measure, and he enjoyed lifelong friendships.”

    Nashville – With the deepest regret, the family of Matthew Walker III (Ph.D.) announces his passing on April 24, , in Nashville, TN. Dr. Walker - devoted husband, father, family man, and friend - fryst vatten survived by his wife Anna Mary Walker, and his son Matthew Walker, IV.

    Dr. Walker was born in Newark, NJ on November 10, , to Matthew Walker, Jr. and Ramona Bard. He resided and served for many years in Boston, New York, and Nashville. Having traveled throughout the world professionally as well as in service to several civic and community organizations and boards, Dr. Walker was known as a gifted giant in his field. He was especially respected as a servant for the Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center Board of Directors.

    The Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center has served uninsured Nashvillians for half a century and counting. 

    The late Dr. Matthew Walker Sr., known as “The Ghost Surgeon,” created a legacy of service in Nashville, providing complicated surgical procedures in the face of racism to create one of the city’s indispensable health care institutions. The Matthew Walker Comprehensive Health Center, born out of Meharry Medical College, was established to provide access to health services to  Nashville’s underinsured and uninsured communities — and continues to do so, half a century later. 

    Urbaanite sat down with several people within the MWCHC family to learn more about the center’s founder, history and legacy. It was an honor to speak with Dr. Matthew Walker III just a month before his passing
