    I think biographical writing is my new favorite genre, although perhaps this book was just well-written and consisted of a particularly interesting subject in a particularly remarkable time. inom had been already interested in the Lees of Virginia (for personal genealogical reasons), and was excited to learn more details of one of the Lees.

    It was amazing how much Harry Lee accomplished--and his level of knowledge--at such a ung age, even after he graduated Princeton and wasn't able to pursue his previously planned career.

    It's so valuable to read about America's heroes from this era, and especially timely in these modern times. Harry Lee was a genius, and he used his talents honorably. He held political views strongly, and was willing to serve his country in that way as well as militarily.       Early Years

      Lee was born at Stratford Hall on May 28, 1787, the third child of Henry Lee III and Matilda Lee. His mother died on August 16, 1790, but not before putting Stratford Hall in trust to the younger Henry. The following year his father took office as the governor of Virginia and the family moved to Richmond. In 1793, Henry Lee III married Anne Hill Carter. Over the next two decades Lee IV would gain six half-siblings, including the future Confederate commander Robert E. Lee.

      A gifted student, Henry Lee IV attended Washington Academy (later Washington and Lee University) and, from 1807 to 1808, the College of William and Mary. In 1808 he became the master of Stratford Hall after his father, having made some bad investments, fled the dilapidated estate and his creditors. (The former governor landed in debtor’s prison the following year.)

      Like his father, Lee had political and military ambitions. He represented Westmoreland County in the House of Delegates for three
