John Lawrence Burns[1] (September 5, 1793 – February 4, 1872[2]), veteran of the War of 1812, became a 69-year-old civilian combatant with the Union Army at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. He was wounded, but survived to become a national celebrity.

Burns was born in Burlington, New Jersey, of Scottish ancestry; his father claimed a relationship with poet Robert Burns. He served as an enlisted man in the War of 1812, fighting in numerous battles, including Lundy's Lane, and volunteered for both the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. He was rejected for combat duty in the latter war due to his advanced age, but he served as a teamster in support of the Union Army. The Rt. Hon. John Burns (20 October 1858 - 24 January 1943) was a Socialist politician in the Battersea area.
Born in Lambeth, he was one of sixteen children of a deserted mother. He began work at the age of 10 before becoming an apprentice engineer. He became an active socialist and trade unionist and in 1881 formed the Battersea branch of the Social Democratic förbund (SDF).
With the creation of the London County Council in 1889, Burns was elected as a Progressive Party councillor for Battersea with the backing of the SDF. He left the SDF later that year, eventually joining the Liberal Party. He held his council seat at the next five triennial elections, remaining a member of the LCC until 1907.
In 1895 he was elected to the House of Commons as MP for Battersea. He became a cabinet minister as President of the Local Government Board, but resigned on the outbreak of the First World War in 1914.

John M. Burns (1938 – 29 December 2023) was an English comics artist, with a career stretching back to the late 1950s.
Biography
[edit]His initial work was as an illustrator for Junior Express and School Friend.[4] He also worked on the "Wrath of the Gods" in Boys' World.
Later in the 1960s, Burns worked on TV Century 21 and its sister magazines, including the Space Family Robinson series in Lady Penelope.
For a while he drew daily comics strips for newspapers The Daily Sketch, The Daily Mirror and The Sun, including The Seekers, Danielle and, for a period succeeding Enrique Romero during 1978–79, Modesty Blaise.[4]
Burns moved on to illustrate TV tie-in strips for Look-in, always scripted by Angus Allan. He also worked on the title story for Countdow
