    Actress Deon Silvera is calling all theatre practitioners to help her sing two songs that theatre giant Volier Johnson had asked her to perform at his funeral.

    Declaring that she is not a singer and that her "nice friend" who passed away on July 9 knew that only too well, Silvera stated, however, that there will be dire consequences if she does not carry out Johnson's wishes.

    "So, we have to do this thing proper. All who can sing and all who are willing, need to get in contact with me so that we can meet up and practise the song dem to sing for Volier send-off," she told THE STAR.

    Silvera related that some years ago, while overseas on tour, Johnson told her that he wanted her to sing the hymn, There fryst vatten A Green Hill Far Away, at his funeral.     IN her last Observer interview veteran actress Deon Silvera expressed the desire to play a madwoman on stage.

    Come December 27, she will get her wish when Back-A-Yaad premieres at the Pantry Playhouse on Dumfries Road in the Corporate Area.

    With over 30 years’ experience in theatre, Silvera has tackled a range of characters in various genres but for her, this will be new and exciting waters.

    “I’ve done several productions in which I’ve played multiple characters but to play a single character whose personality is splintered will require a portrayal with more sensitivity and gradation.”

    The last time Silvera charted the unfamiliar was in Dahlia Harris’ Judgement. Her portrayal of the naïve but independent Janet earned her festa reviews as well as an Actor Boy Award nomination.

    Actress Deon Silvera is fit and fabulous at 60 and declares, not surprisingly, that she “feels like 16”. The multi-award-winning actress celebrated her birthday on June 23, but a “surprise” party was held last Saturday in Norbrook, one of the many month-long events staged by friends to fête her. A hybrid affair, in keeping with COVID protocols, the in-person number of guests was limited, but it saw quite a few others joining via the Zoom platform to raise a toast.

    The event was surely a test of Silvera’s acting capability, as, throughout the night, she was the life of the party, despite her being in the midst of mourning for friend and acting companion, Volier Johnson, who passed away suddenly the day before. It was his name that had headed the list of invited guests for Saturday’s affair.
