Mike Smith was born on March 22, 1982 in Kingston, Ontario. He is the eleventh goaltender in NHL history to score a goal, which he did in the 2013–14 season against the Detroit Red Wings. After playing for both the Dallas Stars and the Tampa Bay Lightning, Mike signed a six-year contract extension with the Coyotes in 2013 and, after spending a total of six seasons in the desert, was traded to the Calgary Flames on June 17, 2017. Internationally he was named to the 2014 Canadian Olympic Hockey Team, winning a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in addition to a Gold Medal at the 2015 World Championships as Canada’s starting goalie, going 10-0 through the tournament and recording a shutout streak of 190:03 in the medal round. Mike Smith (born March 22, 1982) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey goaltender. Smith played 16 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning, Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes, Calgary Flames, and the Edmonton Oilers. Smith is the 11th goaltender in NHL history to score a goal, which he did in the 2013–14 season against the Detroit Red Wings.[1] A two-time NHL All-Star (2017, 2018),[2] he was named to the 2014 Canadian Olympic Hockey Team, winning a gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics.[3]
Selected by the Dallas Stars in the 2001 NHL draft, Smith played in the American Hockey League (AHL) for the Utah Grizzlies, Houston Aeros, and the Iowa Stars.
