    In the Shadow of Men: Women Historians in the Russian Empire

    While during the last 25 years the history of women historians in Western Europe and the United States and their contributions to historiography have been widely researched, women historians in the Russian Empire have been totally ignored. In my lecture I will present 50 women, born between 1804 and 1884, who can be identified as historians (in a wide sense), in order to outline their collective biography (family background, fathers, brothers and husbands, education, occupations, political activities). These women of different ethnic origin made significant contributions to historical studies, particularly in the fields of social history and Alltagsgeschichte, which are widely forgotten today.

    Andreas Kappeler (born 1943) is a Swiss historian. He is professor emeritus for the history of Eastern Europe at the University of Vienna.

    Life

    Kappeler was born in Winterthur, Switzerland on September 20, 1943. From 1962 to 1969, he studied history, slavistics, publizistik (roughly communication science) and history of Eastern Europe at the universities of Zurich and Vienna. He spent extensive periods in Paris, Helsinki, and Moscow in the following years before he became a professor for East European History at the University of Cologne. In 1998 he moved to the University of Vienna, where in 2006 he initiated the Doctoral Programme Austrian Galicia and its Multicultural Heritage.[1] Until 2016, he remained the responsible editor for one of the most reputable journals in East European studies, the Jahrbücher für Osteuropäische Geschichte.

    Absolwent uniwersytetów w Zurychu i Wiedniu. Doktorat w 1969 (Ivan Groznyj im Spiegel der ausländischen Druckschriften seiner Zeit. Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte des westlichen Rußlandbildes) na Uniwersytecie w Zurychu. Habilitacja w 1979 dotyczyła grup narodowych i etnicznych żyjących nad Wołgą (Rußlands erste Nationalitäten. Das Zarenreich und die Völker der Mittleren Wolga vom 16. bis 19. Jahrhundert). Od 1982 roku profesor na Uniwersytecie w Kolonii, od 1998 do 2011 na Uniwersytecie w Wiedniu. Członek Ukraińskiej Akademii Nauk i Austriackiej Akademii Nauk. Zajmuje się różnymi aspektami dziejów imperialnej Rosji carskiej[2].
