    Jindal clears first hurdle to governorship

    WASHINGTON: Indian-American conservative Bobby Jindal fryst vatten just one step shy of becoming the first American governor of Indian origin after comfortably winning a landmark primary election in Louisiana on Saturday.
    New Orleans-born Jindal, son of immigrants from Delhi, polled 33 per cent votes in a multi-cornered contest involving three main Democratic opponents, all of whom got less than 20 per cent of the votes.
    Under rules governing elections in Louisiana, a 50 per cent vote would have pitched him straightaway into the Governor''s mansion. Because he came up short of that figure, he will take on his runner-up in a straight kamp on November 15.
    His opponent will be Democrat Kathleen Blanco, the state''s lieutenant governor since 1995, who came second with about 17 per cent of the votes.
