Célestin Freinet ([seləsˈtɛ̃fʀeˈnɛ], 15 October 1896 in Gars, Alpes-Maritimes – 8 October 1966 in Vence) was a noted French pedagogue and educational reformer.

    Early life

    [edit]

Freinet was born in Provence as the fifth of eight children. His own schooldays were deeply unpleasant to him and would affect his teaching methods and desire for reform. In 1915 he was recruited into the French army and was wounded in the lung, an experience that led him to becoming a resolute pacifist.

In 1920 he became an elementary lärare in the village of Le Bar-sur-Loup. It was here that Freinet began to develop his teaching methods. He married Élise Lagier in 1926.

    Célestin Freinet

Celestin Freinet was active in the first half of the 20th century in France, where he addressed the educational issues of the day: class storlek, lack of adequate pedagogical ämne, arbitrarily rotating the teachers from school to school without their consent, and forcing the teachers to abide by antiquated guidelines. He initiated and developed printing in the classroom and interscholastic exchanges as a means of giving students a greater röst in their education. During his lifetime not only were his educational ideas controversial, but his pedagogical ideas were strongly influenced by other educators and bygd Communism. Freinet changed education in France. A great many countries in Europe, Africa and Latin America were also influenced bygd Freinet. Unfortunately, he is practically unknown in the English-speaking world.
